Ford government and CUPE Action
Posted: Tue Nov 8, 2022

On Monday October 31st the Ford Conservatives took the unprecedented step of proposing legislation that would force a contract on education workers violating workers constitutional right to bargain fairly keeping many workers in poverty instead of continuing with negotiations.

To pass it they've invoked the notwithstanding clause overriding the Charters' protections of the fundamental right to the collective bargaining process.

This is the first time in the history of Canada that a government has done so to pre-emptively end a labour action.

There's a growing chorus of Ontarians unions and community organizations who are expressing their outrage about both the paltry elements of the government's offer as well as their bullying tactics to ram it through.

The 55000 members of CUPE's Ontario School Boards Council of Unions (OSBCU) custodians maintenance and library workers secretaries early childhood educators educational assistants IT professionals who are working in publicly-funded schools across Ontario are the backbone of Ontario's public education system. They are also the lowest-paid education workers earning on average only $39000 a year which has left many on the brink of poverty.

Let's send a message to the Ford Conservatives that they need to drop the bully tactics withdraw this legislation and come up with a real deal that works for education workers students and parents.

Show your support by going to the picket lines at these address and times.

April 28 Day of Mourning 2020
Posted: Thu Apr 23, 2020

On April 28, Unifor joins workers across Canada to commemorate those injured or killed on the job. Collectively we are solemnly reminded that more needs to be done to protect the health and safety of workers - a particularly significant message during the crisis we face during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As we pause to reflect on the tragic, traumatizing and needless loss of life due to workplace injury and occupational disease, we also respond to the deaths that could have been avoided had employers and governments adequately responded to the current crisis. Essential frontline workers, particularly those in health care, are most at risk of contracting COVID-19. Unifor continues to fight for necessary prevention plans to save lives and minimize the risk of exposure to the virus by frontline workers across Canada.

We also take the time to remember workers across the globe who went to work and did not come home, especially the frontline workers who put their lives at risk everyday to serve the public, and those who are fighting for change.

Labour activists across Canada are demanding that employers take workers' health and safety concerns much more seriously and that all levels of government reinforce the vital right to refuse unsafe work. Now more than ever before, the voice of workers must be heard and listened to, and acted upon.

The best way to control any hazard is to systematically eliminate or remove it from the workplace, rather than relying on workers to reduce their personal exposure. The hierarchy of controls must prevail in order to protect workers in all workplaces, regardless of size or location. Since science on COVID19 is uncertain, we must follow " the precautionary principle" and err on the side of caution.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a vibrant light on prevention shortcomings. Workers are leading the movement, and calls-to-action, for safer workplaces. Today we thank them for their commitment to creating safe workplaces for all.

As we reflect on the importance of the day, the union will also pause to remember three Unifor members who lost their lives at work since last year's Day of Mourning:

  • John Iles | Local 222 Canada Cartage | December 23, 2019
  • Mohammed Hasan Bhai | Local 40 HBC Logistics | February 12, 2020

MESSAGE FROM LOCAL PRESIDENT COWAN REGARDING ONGOING PANDEMIC
Posted: Sun Mar 29, 2020

To All Members of Local 43

Brothers and Sisters.

After receiving calls from some members, I am sending this memo to the membership to help clarify the communication sent out by Assistant to the President Chris MacDonald and Assistant to the Quebec Director John Calouri on the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. The memo I am referencing can be found at http://www.unifor43.org/bulletindocs/Members_entering_customer_premises.pdf

To be clear, if as an individual after you have done all the work you can from outside but you do not feel safe going into a customer's home or business you will need to call management and communicate that with them. The manager at that point must address the concern, which may include having another employee finish any work required in the home or business. The company feels that this should be achievable via their new Assisted Self Install / repair process, which by design puts the inside work in the hands of the customer. This will still likely have times where entry is required. It is the position of the National Union that "given all that is happening in the world that entering the home should be done on a volunteer basis only".

We continue to work with the Bell Family of Companies to ensure our members are provided a safe working environment and continue to have a reliable source of income during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Should you find yourself in any type of conflict with management regarding your decision to not enter into a customer premises, please contact your Local Union Representative and your Health and Safety Representative. They will be available to support you with your decision. It is our hope that we can avoid a work refusal, but are fully prepared to do so with the full support and backing of Unifor.

If you are unsure of your rights or you have any questions please contact your Local Union Representative and or Health and Safety Representative and we will provide you with answers as quickly as we can, understanding that the current landscape has been consistently in flux with changes being communicated weekly, daily and sometimes hourly by the government and its regulatory bodies as well from our employers.

Be Safe!

In Solidarity

Shawn Cowan

President Unifor Local 43

Message from National President Jerry Diaz
Posted: Wed Oct 2, 2019

The following is a message from Unifor National President Jerry Diaz

In less than one month, Canadians will elect a new federal government. What you and I, and every member of our union, chooses to do in that time can shape not only the next four years in our country, but decades to come.

As President of our union, I spend a lot of time with workers who are taking on the worst challenges that anyone could face. I often only end up involved in local issues when things are going badly for workers. Looking ahead to the election on October 21, I don't want things to get worse for Unifor members.

I think of Jackie, from Local 222, who heard that General Motors planned to stop auto production in Oshawa. Then while campaigning to keep her plant open, Jackie found out she was expecting a child.

She didn't stop her campaign, she didn't sit it out, but I can tell you that she worried. Jackie now not only has to worry about trade deals, about labour law that favours greedy corporations, but also about the public services that we all rely on.

Public universal healthcare, affordable childcare, pensions, education and training. All of our families rely on these services, but all across the country, the public services that workers need are under attack from provincial conservative governments.

Jackie deserves better. So do you.

In this election, Canada's workers need to elect a government that will put workers first, to reverse the affordability crisis that's taken hold in urban and rural communities.

The next federal government must maintain public services like education, stop the Americanization of our healthcare system, and take on the big challenges ahead.

Just last Friday, millions of young people participated in the Global Climate Strike, actions that continue this week. Make no mistake, climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and workers are ready to rise to the challenge, but some federal parties seem to be too afraid to look at this reality head-on.

Instead, Andrew Scheer's Conservatives turn the other way, and cozy up to corporate lobbyists, White Supremacists, and anti-choice activists.

If Scheer's party wins, then Canada's workers will lose.

We can't let this happen, for today's workers, and for the generations that will come after us.

In this election, I'm voting to Stop Scheer. Are you with me?

Take the pledge today.

In solidarity,

Jerry Dias
Unifor National President http://www.uniforvotes.ca/

Jerry Dias

10 Years of job erosion
Posted: Wed May 15, 2019

The following is quoted from an email addressing the blog post in the link, it comes from the Unifor National

Members,

Check out the new Bell Real Talk blog that details a decade of erosion in Bell bargaining units.

"Over the past 10 years, Bell has slashed the number of unionized employees in nearly every unit. This is not a well-kept secret, with Bell employees witnessing the job erosion through various tactics. Erosion continues despite all bargaining committees trying to address this at the bargaining table.

Where did the jobs go? Bell has automated some, and sent others overseas or to domestic contractors.

The only job growth in the last 10 years has been in the Bell Technical Solutions (BTS) group. A company that was founded to contract out technical work for lower pay.

Unifor has fought to defend members in BTS and raise standards for them. Now, even this prosperous unit has been passed over for the next major project Bell is in the process of launching."

Save Oshawa GM: Message from Jerry Dias
Posted: Wed Feb 6, 2019

Members,

Please take 1 minute right now to save Canadian jobs. Can you take the pledge to Boycott Mexican-Made General Motors vehicles?

If enough Unifor members, friends and families sign the pledge, then we can pressure GM dealerships and management. GM needs to get the message that Canadians will not forgive them for this betrayal.

The closure of the Oshawa Assembly Plant would result in the loss of thousands of Canadian jobs, taking livelihoods away from the very people who bailed GM out when it was facing bankruptcy.

GM believes it is untouchable as it takes advantage of low pay and a lack of human and labour rights in Mexico while it tramples Canadian workers and communities.
Let GM and your local dealerships know that you pledge to boycott Mexican-made GM vehicles, unless they reverse their decision and Save Oshawa GM.

Already taken the pledge? Share the link with your friends and tell them why supporting Canadian auto jobs is important to you. Need more information? Read why and how to support the pledge to boycott.

Download and share the Union Made Vehicle Purchase Guide.

Jerry Dias Unifor National President

Action is needed now to #SaveOshawaGM:

Visit SaveOshawaGM.ca to order a free #SaveOshawaGM ornament to display on your tree and on social media using the hashtag #SaveOshawaGM. Please encourage your friends and family to sign up for an ornament as the number of people who register is a solid indicator of community support that we can point to.

At the SaveOshawaGM.ca website you will also find a letter to email to GM executives telling them to allot product to the Oshawa Assembly Plant.

Take a minute to click and send this important email. #SaveOshawaGM t-shirts are also available for purchase on the site, or using this form.

This is a crucial time in the campaign and together we need to put as much public pressure as possible on GM. The company and its executives must hear our outrage and understand the consequences of their decision in terms of reputational and financial harm to the GM brand.

We need everyone to get active on social media to get this message out. Like Facebook.com/SaveOshawaGM and follow @SaveOshawaGM on Twitter. Use the #SaveOshawaGM and #Unifor hashtags and tag in @GM, @GMcanada and CEO @mtbarra. Lets see those pictures with your #SaveOshawaGM ornament!
